چکیده

Late Quaternary slip rates and satellite-based geodetic data for the western Great Basin constrain regional fault-slip distribution and evolution. The geologic slip rate on the Fish Lake Valley fault zone (the northwest extension of the Furnace Creek fault zone) increases northward from about 3 to 5 mm/yr, in agreement with modeled geodetic data. The increase coincides with the intersections of the Deep Springs fault, connected to the Owens Valley fault zone, and of other faults connected to the Saline Valley fault. The combined geologic and geodetic data suggest that (1) the northwest-striking faults of the Eastern California shear zone north of the Garlock fault are connected by northto northeast-striking normal faults that transfer slip in a series of right steps, and (2) the amount and distribution of slip among the many faults of this broad, complex plate boundary have changed through time.

Refined kinematics of the Eastern California shear zone from GPS observations, 1993-1998

Global Positioning System (GPS) results from networks spanning the Eastern California shear zone and adjacent Sierra Nevada block, occupied annually between 1993 and 1998, constrain plate margin kinematics. We use an elastic block model to relate GPS station velocities to long-term fault slip rate estimates. The model accounts for elastic strain accumulation on the San Andreas fault, as well as...

Holocene slip rates along the Owens Valley fault, California: Implications for the recent evolution of the Eastern California Shear Zone

One of the largest historical earthquakes in California occurred in 1872 along the Owens Valley fault located along the western margin of the Eastern California Shear Zone. New paleoseismic and optically stimulated luminescence data are the first to bracket the timing of the pre-1872 rupture to between 3.3 6 0.3 and 3.8 6 0.3 ka. These data yield an earthquake recurrence interval between 4100 a...

Temporal variations in slip rate of the White Mountain Fault Zone, Eastern California

The evolution of fault slip through time may yield insight into the geodynamics of deforming lithosphere. Precise determination of temporal variations in fault slip is often hindered, however, by a dearth of markers of varying age from which to reconstruct fault slip. Here we determine slip rates across the White Mountain Fault Zone over the past ca. 0.8 Ma from displaced alluvial deposits pres...

Kinematics of Transpressional Deformation Zones in the Urmia Fault Zone, Northwest Iran

Metamorphic and various intrusive rocks in the Urmia area are located in a transpressed active continental margin. These complexes in the Zagros orogen were deformed during an oblique convergence scenario between the Arabian and Sanandaj–Sirjan blocks in NW Iran. The Urmia area contains both NW-SE striking dextral strike-slip and SW verging NE dipping ductile reverse shear fabrics. Ductile shea...

THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERISTY DEPARTMENT OF GEOSCIENCES Estimating the Pleistocene Slip Rate of the Owens Valley Fault, California

Slip rates of the right-lateral Owens Valley Fault lie at the center of an ongoing debate over the rheology and mechanics of lithospheric deformation in eastern California. Slip rates determined from paleoseismic records of surface rupture yield Late Pleistocene – Holocene rates of < 1mm/yr to ~2 mm/yr. The decadal velocity field across the valley, however, approaches ~6 mm/yr of right-lateral ...
